In some places to attend public school the student must pay fees of around $80 per year (uniform, books, supplies, exam fees, etc.). This may not sound like much until you consider that some families’ annual income is $360. There is also pressure for children to work to help sustain the family. Team Academic helps remove the barriers to high school education for these children.
Team Academic supports special projects that meet our mission. For example, we supported the establishment of the mobile lending library in Maputo, Mozambique. These children didn’t have access to a library otherwise.
In some areas government is unable to pay teacher’s salaries creating a barrier to education for children. Team Academic subsides teacher’s salaries to remove this barrier. For example Team Academic subsides the salary of Sita Adhikari who teaches Nepalese language at Okhledanda school in the Pokara district of Nepal.
Did you know there are at least 123 Nepalaese languages spoken as a mother tongue (first language) in Nepal? The official language is Nepali and schools typically use this language for instruction. So you can see how it is a barrier for students that don’t speak the Nepali language. Sita is doing her part to remove this barrier and Team Academic is helping.
Team Academic awards scholarships to economically disadvantaged collegue students who would not be able to obtain a college degrees otherwise. These scholarships remove the barriers of tuition, fees, books, food, transportation, technology and other barriers. Team Academic supports students who prove to have a good acumen and make good grades. Our goal is to stick with them throughout their college careers.
An example of a school supported by Team Academic is the Immanuel Junior Academy in Athi River Kenya. This school removes barriers for students in the slums. Team Academic removes the barriers of school fees and meals for students from the Athi River Slum. Ms. Joyce Mbindo is the leader of this school as well as Team Academic’s Kenya Program Manager.
Team Academic is approved as an organization exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of Title 26 of the United States Code and our EIN is 83-1278166 for you accounting records.
